It's time to think about Travel.

Wrestling Travels for Top 25 Showdown at Wyoming

LARAMIE, Wy– No. 7 Arizona State Wrestling (2-0, 1-0 Pac-12) will return to team action this Saturday, Feb. 6 at 11:45 a.m. (MST) against Big 12 opponent No. 25 Wyoming (2-2, 1-1 Big 12) at UniWyo Sports Complex.

Last weekend at the UVU Round Robin Tournament, redshirt freshman No. 7 Cohlton Schultz (6-0) defeated the No. 1 heavyweight wrestler in the Big 12, Wyoming senior Brian Andrews, on his way to being crowned champion of the heavyweight class. With his three match victories, Schultz remains one of five Sun Devil wrestlers who are undefeated this season.

Sun Devil wrestlers Brandon Courtney, Michael McGee, Anthony Valencia, Kordell Norfleet and Schultz are all undefeated.

Fans can follow along with the matches all day long via and on Twitter @ASUWrestling.

Due to the unusual schedule this season, teams agreed to additional matches with the goal to help individual wrestlers reach the minimum amount of matches needed to participate in and/or qualify for the 2021 NCAA Tournament.

There will be two additional matches that will begin at 9:35 a.m. prior to the dual against Wyoming and approximately ten extra matches after the team dual.
No. 25 Wyoming

It has been 22 years since the last time ASU and Wyoming stood across from each other on a wrestling mat.
Wyoming went 8-10 overall and 4-4 in Big 12 conference play last season, including victories over Pac-12 opponents Cal State Bakersfield and Oregon State. As a team, the Cowboys finished in seventh place at the Big 12 Championship. Then-junior Brian Andrews won the Big 12 heavyweight title and he became just the third Cowboy to take home a Big 12 title since UW joined the league in 2016.

Andrews along with six other Cowboy wrestlers were ranked in college wrestling polls and the Big 12 champion landed the No. 14 spot according to FloWrestling, one rank behind Schultz.

Led by veteran head coach Mark Branch, the Cowboys have won two dual matches this season. Last weekend, they defeated Air Force 22-9 with 197-pound sophomore Stephen Buchanan earning the lone bonus point on the night.

ASU owns a 10-7 record all-time against the Cowboys.

This weekend’s battle features multiple ranked matchups, starting at the 133-pound weight class with No. 7 Michael McGee taking on No. 20 Job Greenwood. McGee, a two-time NCAA Championships qualifier, has impressed in his first three matches as a Sun Devil, winning all three. Greenwood, a two-time high school state runner-up, has started his season strong, winning seven of nine matches.

Moving on to the 157-pound weight class, No. 13 Jacori Teemer will battle Wyoming’s No. 21 Jacob Wright.

Teemer, a five-time state champion in high school, broke out on the scene last year as a freshman for Zeke Jones. His opponent, Wright, earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Championships last year.

Redshirt senior Anthony Valencia will clash against No. 22 Cole Moody (165), who tallied 20 victories last season and has started 10-1 in 2021. Valencia looks to continue his bonus point success after earning his first bonus of the year against Little Rock and placing his name amongst the all-time ASU greats, tying for 9th all-time career bonus wins with 47

For the 174-pound weight class, No. 14 redshirt freshman Trey Munoz will face off against No. 17 Hayden Hastings. Munoz was the No. 1 ranked wrestler in the state of California for the 160-pound class and his opponent, Hastings, has qualified for two straight NCAA Champions with Wyoming.

Munoz has put himself on the map with his first Sun Devil victory with a 8-3 decision over Oklahoma’s No. 8 Anthony Mantanona. Munoz dominated Mantanona earning two takedowns and a 3:17 riding time bonus point in his debut.

Sun Devil senior Kordell Norfleet (197) will step onto the mat across from No. 21 Stephen Buchanan, a NCAA Championships qualifier. The Chicago native earned a pin against Little Rock in 1:41 to begin his 3-0 to start the season.

Fans will also see a rematch between Schultz and Big 12 heavyweight leader, Brian Andrews. In the UVU Round Robin the two held each other scoreless for the first period and half of the second before the Sun Devil had a quick take down over Andrews to give himself a 2-0 lead. In seconds following the take down, Andrews claimed an escape point to cut the score in half.
Andrews earned another escape point after beginning on the bottom for the third period, but as the time ticked away Schultz shut his momentum down with another take down for the 4-2 win.
