Wednesday is International Holocaust Remembrance Day.
Students across the country, including in Iowa, commemorated the somber day virtually, with tours of Block 27 inside Auschwitz, then a presentation of “The Auschwitz Album”. The Auschwitz Album presents a rare, important piece of visual documentation of the workings at the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration and extermination camp, depicting the arrival and selection of a transport of Hungarian Jews.
The workshop gave students a look at life in Auschwitz, the personal face within the Final Solution, and the human elements.
“I’ve never had the opportunity to go to Poland and see Auschwitz, but being able to kind of be transported there over video was something that allowed me to connect in a really kind of scary but also meaningful way,” says Ashley Carol-Fingerhut, Executive Director of Iowa Hillel.
